No it’s not the IRS calling you!

I just read a very interesting article from the San Francisco Chronicle regarding the largest scam targeting seniors. It starts with a random phone call stating this is an agent from the IRS and you have back taxes that must be paid now or an officer will be sent to your home to arrest you.

Don’t panic you are probably a target of the IRS scam.

Here are a few tips on how to verify it’s really the IRS even if the caller knows the last four digits of your social security number. Just be careful as you should not provide any personal information.

  • The IRS will always notify you in writing first.
  • Even if your caller ID says IRS it might not be, don’t trust your caller ID.
  • The IRS will never send and officer to arrest you.
  • The IRS will never demand you to pay without providing you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount.

If you receive a phone call and if you think the call is fraud hang up and call the IRS to verify
