As many of our clients are aware, when documents are executed in our office, we provide notarial services. At the time of the signing we ask for current identification, usually a state issued driver’s license, but sometimes it comes to our attention that the ID provided is out of date. It’s not uncommon to have clients that no longer drive (or maybe they’ve never driven).
As a Notary Public in California, we cannot use the Driver’s License, or any state issued ID, if it has expired after 5 years of its issuance. While we may be able to identify you, we will not be able to notarize the documents based on the expired identification provided.
If you have an expired license and do not plan to renew, or you are unable to initially obtain a driver’s license, we suggest you obtain an Identification card or a senior citizen identification card (only available if you are over the age of 62) from the Department of Motor Vehicles. Below you will find a link for more information on these two forms of identification. Obtaining a new, valid ID card will surely prove beneficial!
